Shaping Europe!

High-ranking experts from all over the continent will meet at Leipzig in October (27 to 29) for the sixth time. As an expert fair and congress for regional and locational development in Europe, euregia is not simply a one-time event, but enjoys an excellent reputation as the largest communication and benchmarking forum in the sector. This is illustrated by the enormous success achieved at the last congress that broke new records in the number of exhibitors and visitors. In 2006, some 2,200 experts from 24 countries informed themselves by visiting 170 exhibitors and used the large congress and its programme with more than 40 themes to share their experiences with other participants. The euregia 2008 programme is packed with themes this year and features short distances to the different areas. The expert fair as well as the international congress will both take place at the Congress Center Leipzig. At the Center you will be able to obtain exhaustive information on current projects, networks and initiatives as well as on EU programmes and innovative financing models, which are presented in detail along the newly created “path to financing”.
More information on the thematic offers at euregia 2008 as well as the complete programme are available

CURE meets Eifel - a short report from the Eifel-Conference 5 September 2008 in Vogelsang
The "Zukunftsinitiative Eifel" (Future Initiative Eifel) held its yearly conference in the afternoon of Friday 5 September. One of the founding members of the Eifel Initiative is the Kreis Aachen, one of the CURE founding partners. In the morning of the same day, a smaller workshop was held among the coordinating team of the Zukunftsinitiative Eifel and representatives of the European Commission as well as the CURE coordinating team.
Hannes Lorenzen and Robert Lukesch were invited as speakers for the CURE initiative for both events.
Zukunftsinitiative Eifel is a cooperation project of towns and districts geographically situated in two German Bundesländer as well as - from this day on - a Belgian region. Focus is the economic development of the region, but future themes like climate change and health are already identified. The concept of the Zukunftsinitiative Eifel is not to build new institutions, but to make people from local administrations responsible for a certain field of interest. These coordinators take a role in the fields of culture and tourism, forest and timber, agriculture, craft and industries as well as in technology and innovation. They bring together actors in these fields in order to create local partnerships, create better conditions for the settlement of small and medium enterprises as well as starting common marketing initiatives. Entrepreneurs are benefiting from the provided information and from the exchange with like-minded people. Some are happy to find The "Regionalmarke Eifel", a local brand for products, is already successful in food products.
Wladyslaw Piskorz, Margit Tünnemann and Johan Magnusson from the DG Regio of the European Commission welcomed the successful initiatives and emphasized the importance of rural-urban relationships for the future of regional development. The need to commute from the rural areas to the cities due to a lack of economic activities in the rural areas was clearly identified as a problem regarding social life, climate change and organisation of transport.
The conference in the afternoon counted about 400 participants, mainly representatives of city and county councils, chambers for industries and small businesses, farming organisations etc.
CURE was seen as one of the future partnerships that would allow to share success stories and to get a European perspective of regional development.
The highlight of the day was the signing of a cooperation contract with a new member, the Belgian Eifel region. The Prime Minister of the German speaking community of Belgium, Mr. Karl Heinz Lambertz, held a persuasive speech for cross border cooperation and signed the contract.
