Partners
The Convention for Urban and Rural Europe is jointly initiated by a group of European organisations:
- Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe,
- PREPARE Partnership for Rural Europe,
- ECOVAST (European Council for the Village and Small Town),
- OeAR Regionalberatung GmbH,
- Sustainable Cities Research Institute at Northumbria University, UK,
- ICLEI (Local Governments for Sustainability),
- and a number of local and regional authorities.
The initiating partners represent different sides of the urban/rural issue, and share a commitment to focus on how cities and rural regions can work together to achieve sustainable future for both sides. They share a strong concern about the polarising of urban and rural interests in the mind-set of the general public and of politicians in many parts of Europe. They believe that this polarity is disguising the essential inter-dependence between cities and rural regions, and could seriously jeopardise the efforts of the EU and member states to secure the sustainable development of regions throughout the European Union.
